I created Doula Woman because people are beautiful and spiritual and draw from an ancient wisdom. We often give away our power when it is ours to cherish.
My doula philosophy: your body, birth and motherhood belong to you. You are the power and authority on this. You intrinsically know what is best for yourself and baby, for the mom-baby unit.
You need not give up what calls to you, be it 100% bodily sovereignty, spontaneous labor, vaginal birth, epidural-free, epidural asap, home birth, planned csection, freedom from pleasing others, etc. in order to have a healthy baby. You and your baby are healthiest when you work from self-trust.
Historically during postpartum people would settle in for 40 days with their newborn and do nothing but care for themselves and their newborns. As a postpartum doula I bridge what has been lost in current times.
I worked 18+ years in the medical system as a cardiac ultrasound tech. This experience means I feel comfortable in a hospital setting, have worked with nurses and doctors, can translate medical language, and I have worked with in-patients in hospital.
Now my doula work is interwoven with my life and I love this. I navigate the system on behalf of family members and have done this for decades. My own children are adults. The positive effects from the doula support I received at my third birth are felt decades later.
In addition to full-time plus doula work and when we are not in them midst of a pandemic, I volunteer at the Riverwest Co-op, lead prenatal yoga, provide child-care, and walk all around town. I am signed for the Radical Rebel Birthkeepers course to begin in June.
Ask me anything, I would love to connect with you. Thank you for reading this.
Sincerely, Milwaukee doula Martha
